Pronouns meliputi he, she, it, you, we, they, ours, themselves, some, each, dsb.
Peran pronouns atau kata ganti ini
penting bagi keindahan kalimat. Tanpa kata ganti, kita terpaksa mengulang-ulang
kata benda yang sama dalam satu paragraf.
Contoh :
Do you like the president? I don’t like the president.
The president is too pompous.
Bila menggunakan kata ganti :
Do you like the president? I don’t like him. He
is too pompous.
Jenis kata ganti (pronouns)
:
Personal Pronouns
benda-benda tertentu, antara lain I, me, you, he, him, she,….dsb.
Penggunaan Personal
Pronouns tergantung pada hal-hal berikut :
- Number:
singular (e.g.: I) or plural (e.g.: we)
- Person:
1st person (e.g.: I), 2nd person
(e.g.: you) or 3rd person (e.g.: he)
- Gender
: male (e.g.: he), female (e.g.: she) or neuter (e.g.: it)
- Case
: subject (e.g.: we) or object
(e.g.: us)
Aturan pakai Personal
Pronouns
- Ketika kita membicarakan orang lain (orang ketiga) , kita dapat memulai dengan menyebutkan namanya kemudian diikuti dengan menyebutka he/she atau him/her dst.
Contoh :
-
I
like coffee.
-
It
doesn’t work.
-
They
played doubles.
it. Namun, ada beberapa pengecualian dalam pemakaiannya.
- Karena alasan sayang kepada hewan peliharaannya, orang sering menyebutnya dengan he atau she. (This our dog Rusty. He’s ans Alsatian.)
- Terdapat beberapa Negara yang memperlakukan kapal/kendaraan seperti seorang wanita sehingga disebut she / her. (The Titanic was a great ship but she sank on her first voyage.)
-
If
a teacher needs help, he or she should see the principal.
-
If
a teacher needs help, he should see the principal.
-
If
a teacher needs help, they should see the principal.
It dapat digunakan untuk mengawali suatu ungkapan.
-
It
is nice to have a holiday sometimes.
-
It
is important to dress well.
-
It’s
difficult to find a job.
It juga digunakan untuk mengungkapkan cuaca, suhu,
waktu, dan jarak.
-
It’s
raining. - It will probably be hot tomorrow.
- Is it eight o’clock yet?
- It’s 50 kilometers from here to Boston.
Demonstrative Pronouns

Whose sebagai possessive pronoun menunjukkan
kepemilikan.
Contoh :

it was.- This car hasn’t moved for two months. Whose is it ?
Interogtaive pronouns digunakan untuk bertanya. Maka, interrogative pronouns dikenal pula dengan sebutan kata tanya.
INGAT !
Contoh :
-
Who
told you ? John told me.
-
Whom
did you tell ? I told Marry.
Imbuhan ever dibelakang kata tanya tanya sehingga
menjadi whoever, whatever, whichever dsb menunjukkan hal-hal yang cenderung
membingungkan atau mengejutkan.
Contoh :
-
Whoever
would want to do such a nasty thing ?
-
Whatever
did he say to make her cry like that ?
-

Reflexive Pronouns
Reflexive
pronouns menunjukkan diri
subjek, berperan seperti cermin. Reflexive
yourself, ourselves….dsb).
Contoh :
-
I
saw myself in the mirror.
-
They
cannot look after themselves.
-

do you blame yourselves ?

other (e.g. Amanda and Ben
are talking each other. )
-
One
another (e.g. The gangster were
fighting one another. )
Each other dan one another
memiliki arti yang sama. Namun, dalam kalimat lebih sering dan biasa digunakan each other daripada one another .

ganti ini cenderung samar atau tidak jelas.
Indefinite pronouns meliputi all,
another, any, anybody/anyone, anything, each, everybody/everyone, everything,
few, many, nobody, none, one, several, some, somebody/someone.
INGAT ! Banyak indefinite

speech.

night. (pronoun)

(adjective)
Fungsi pronouns meliputi subjective,
objective, dan possessive.
Berikut daftar pronouns berdasarkan fungsinya :
